Travel to eastern paradise in India, Sikkim, is set to get convenient with the inauguration of Sikkim’s first airport. This is incidentally India’s 100th airport.
The airport in Sikkim was inaugurated today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Pakyong. The airport is situated 30km from Gangtok and will start operations from first week of October.
Spicejet will ferry direct flights from Kolkata to Sikkim and Guwahat under the UDAN scheme. Spicejet will operate Bombardier Q-400 aircraft for carrying the passengers.

The airport is an architectural marvel and is situated on top of hill, about 4500 feet above sea level. The aircraft came up at a cost of Rs 605 Cr and is considered an engineering marvel considering the soil reinforcement and slope stabilization techniques that have employed.
