The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant decline in tourism across Rajasthan, with Udaipur, also known as Lake City, being heavily impacted. This year, Udaipur has recorded the highest number of tourists in 14 years, with a notable surge in weekend visits as well.
Traditionally, Udaipur's tourism was largely dependent on foreign visitors, who defined the peak and off-seasons. However, the past four years have seen a remarkable shift, with domestic tourism now driving the industry. Lakhs of domestic tourists are flocking to Udaipur every month, effectively eliminating the concept of an off-season.
Udaipur's economy is heavily reliant on tourism. In the past, the main tourist season began in October or after Navratri and extended until February-March. During this period, hotels, restaurants, guides, and other businesses connected to tourism would generate most of their annual revenue. However, the landscape has changed dramatically. Domestic tourists have begun to sustain the industry year-round, providing consistent business even during the traditional off-season.
Despite this positive trend in domestic tourism, global challenges have continued to affect international travel. As a result, the number of foreign tourists has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. Udaipur's tourism industry, which once heavily depended on foreign visitors, has successfully adapted to these challenges by tapping into the domestic market. The upcoming festive season is expected to bring in record numbers of domestic tourists, further bolstering the city's economy.
