Udaipur, January 27, 2025- For the first time in India, two cities have been declared Wetland Cities under an international recognition program. These cities are Udaipur in Rajasthan and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Udaipur holds the distinction of being the only city in Rajasthan to receive this title.
The Wetland City designation is expected to bring major changes to Udaipur’s development model. Eco-tourism will be a key focus, along with efforts to protect the city’s lakes. Environmentalists see this recognition as an opportunity to make Udaipur’s development more sustainable.
Environment Expert in Department of Environment and Climate Change , Govt. Of Rajasthan Shardul Kothari highlighted that this recognition will ensure better conservation of Udaipur’s lakes. He added that it will boost international tourism and promote eco-friendly initiatives in the region. Traditional water conservation practices will also receive a much-needed boost.
Focus on Menar’s Ponds
With Udaipur now recognized as Rajasthan’s first Wetland City, officials at the state level are working proactively. A management plan for the ponds of Menar, a nearby area known for its biodiversity, is also being developed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Udaipur and Indore on social media, emphasizing the importance of this achievement in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.
