Udaipur-Jodhpur Direct Rail Line Likely Soon

Udaipur, Dec 29, 2025 - A new chapter is set to be added to Rajasthan’s rail network. Direct rail connectivity between Udaipur and Jodhpur now appears to be moving closer to reality.

According to reports, North Western Railway has initiated work on a project that will not only bring two historic cities closer but also transform the economic landscape of the entire region. Under this project, a new railway line will be laid by cutting through difficult hilly terrain between Marwar Junction and Nathdwara.

During his visit to Jodhpur, North Western Railway General Manager Amitabh revealed the detailed blueprint of the project. Earlier, the survey had been halted owing to objections from the Forest Department and technical challenges. However, following special intervention by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, work on the project has resumed.

The current rail route between Jodhpur and Udaipur is quite long and circuitous. To shorten it, the Railways have decided to convert the old metre gauge route between Nathdwara and Marwar Junction into broad gauge. The biggest challenges on this route are the Aravalli hills and dense forest areas.

The plan involves cutting through the hills to create a new path, which is expected to reduce the travel distance between the two cities by nearly 250 kilometres. This reduction could save approximately 4 to 5 hours of travel time. While the project presents a major engineering challenge, it will significantly strengthen rail connectivity across Rajasthan.
