Vande Bharat Sleeper Achieves 180 km/hr in Successful Kota Trial
RDSO conducts high-speed trials under real passenger load; a milestone under Mission Raftaar and Mission Gati Shakti
Nov 7, 2025 - A Vande Bharat Sleeper train successfully completed its high-speed trial at 180 km/hour in Kota, Rajasthan. The indigenously-developed train underwent the test to assess its performance under high-speed conditions. Developed by BEML using ICF technology, the sleeper train is designed for long-distance routes with enhanced comfort and stability. Earlier, the train underwent testing on the Mahoba–Khajuraho section.
Trials are being conducted by the Testing Directorate team of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow. They began on November 2 and will continue until November 17.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Jain informed that the test is being carried out on the Sawai Madhopur–Kota–Nagda section using a 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper second rake. The train is being run at a maximum speed of 180 km/hour to evaluate its technical efficiency, braking capability, stability, vibration levels and the reliability of its mechanical and electrical systems.
The trial was conducted under the supervision of RDSO Testing Director Radheshyam Tiwari and under conditions simulating actual passenger load. The rake was operated in a fully loaded condition, carrying an 800-ton train load plus an additional 108 tonnes (in the form of 50-kg iron-dust-filled containers). Thus, the total operational load during testing was 908 tonnes, allowing the train to be evaluated under real-world operational scenarios. This test stands as a testament to the engineering expertise and technical capabilities of Indian Railways.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper rake is equipped with newly-designed, upgraded bogies that ensure greater stability and comfort even at higher speeds. This trial marks a significant milestone for Indian Railways under Mission Raftaar and Mission Gati Shakti, advancing the country’s high-speed rail network.
