First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train to Launch in January
India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train will be flagged off between Jan 17-19 by PM Modi; inaugural route to be between Guwahati and Kolkata
Jan 2, 2026 - India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train is ready to run! Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this to the media on Thursday (January 1) sharing that the train will be flagged off tentatively between January 17 and 19 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The inaugural run route will be between Guwahati (Kamakhya) and Howrah in West Bengal.
The train will have a composition of 16 coaches, including one coach with 24 berths in 1st AC while the rest will be 2nd and 3rd AC.
The fares of the Vande Bharat sleeper train will be reasonable to enhance affordability for all sections of society, said the Minister, sharing that “In Vande Bharat, the 3rd AC fare will be around Rs 2,300, including food, 2nd AC around Rs 3,000, and 1st AC around Rs 3,600. The fares have been designed keeping the middle class in mind.”
The food served will be in keeping with the station of origin. For example, the train leaving from Howrah will serve Bengali cuisine while the one out of Guwahati will offer Assamese food to the passengers.
The exact date of the launch will be announced within the next two days, the Railways Minister said. He further said that in 2026 there will be a total of 12 Vande Bharat sleeper trains of which six are expected to be flagged off within the next six months
He also shared the timeline for the launch of the country’s first bullet train saying it would be likely on August 15, 2027.
