Venice will continue its day-tripper tax into next year, doubling the fee for last-minute bookings. Starting April 18, 2024, tourists who fail to reserve at least four days in advance will face a charge of EUR 10 (USD 10.80). This measure, announced by Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, aims to address the ongoing challenge of overtourism that has put significant strain on the city's infrastructure. Day-Tripper tax is the days tourists will need to pay to enter the city.
“Venice is the first city in the world that tries to manage the problem of overtourism,” Brugnaro stated.
With a population of 50,000, Venice sees an estimated 25 million to 30 million visitors annually. The day-tripper tax, combined with restrictions on cruise ship routes, has garnered international attention. UNESCO has praised Venice for its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
The tax will be enforced from April 18 to July 27, 2024, on Fridays, weekends, and holidays, covering a total of 54 days—almost twice as many as this year. Exemptions will remain in place for residents, Venetian-born visitors, students, workers, and individuals with lodging reservations.
