Currently, the Wi-Fi service will be available on select aircraft, with plans to extend it to other planes later; the first Indian airline to offer this service on domestic flights
January 2, 2025 - Air India has announced the launch of Wi-Fi internet connectivity services on domestic flights of Airbus A-350, Boeing 787-9 and select Airbus A-321 Neo aircraft. It has become the first Indian airline to offer this service on domestic flights.
The Tata Group-owned Air India has said that the Wi-Fi service on domestic routes will follow the same model as the one provided on its international flights. For now, the Wi-Fi service will be available on select aircraft, with plans to extend it to other planes later.
This Wi-Fi service is available free of cost for Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones with iOS or Android systems, enhancing the passenger experience by allowing the use of multiple devices simultaneously.
Vistara Airlines, which has now merged with Air India, had introduced Wi-Fi service on international flights last July.
Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Air India, said that this decision was taken in view of the increasing need for seamless connectivity at all times. “Connectivity is now an integral part of modern travel. For some, it is about the convenience and comfort of real-time sharing, while for others, it is about greater productivity and efficiency. Whatever one’s purpose, we are confident our guests will appreciate having the option of connecting to the web and enjoying the new Air India experience on board these aircraft.”
According to the Indian Department of Telecommunications, passengers will only be able to use Wi-Fi internet services on the plane once it reaches an altitude of 10,000 feet within Indian airspace. After that, passengers will be able to use their mobile phones and laptops.
How to connect to the in-flight Wi-Fi:
However, the availability of Wi-Fi will depend on satellite connectivity, bandwidth usage and applicable government curbs.
