Bohras Observes Muharram
According to the Hijri calendar followed by Bohra community, today on the day of 10th Muharram, known as Ashura, an Azadari Juloos (Procession of Condolence) was carried out to commemorate the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain.

Dressed in black attires as a symbol of sorrow, men of Dawoodi Bohra (youth) preceded reciting nauhas and doing matam (chest beating).
While, several groups of young and old men were narrating the aftermath of battle of Karbala in the year 61 H, when 72 followers of Imam Hussain were killed by army of Yazid the tyrant king of Syria, young boys were marching holding Alams that signify Abbas ibne Ali, younger brother of Imam Hussain who was the flag bearer (Alamdaar) of Hussain’s group.
The procession started at 2 pm from Moiyyadpura mosque and reached at Wajihpura Mosque where the heartbreaking event of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom was narrated.
Bohras also observed fast today as the day of 10th Muharram is considered as one of the most important days of Islam.
U.S Bohra gathers for Majalis
A small, but flourishing community of Dawoodi Bohra (youth) is staying in North America; one of the ardent readers of UT, Shamim Hussain reported that Majalis of Muharram held in Danbury, Connecticut. Coincidentally, it was Thanksgiving holiday in USA, so all Udaipur Bohras gathered from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, together at one center.
After Maghrib and Isha Namaz we had a Majalis-e-Hussain, where, Zahid Ali, Aijaz Hussain and Asif VR recited nohas.
Shamim Hussain read majalis and explained to kids, the relevance, the stories and the histories that lead to Karbala.
Every year in Connecticut, Bohra Youth Association of North America organizes Majalis-e-Hussain where large part of community members attends the majlis and observe Muharram.
