The 10^th day of Muharram is known as Ashura all over the world. Muslims highly respect the significance of this day and commemorate the death of Imam Hussain in Battle of Karbala by the army of the tyrant Yazid.

Muslims, of all sects, observed fast and held various religious events according to the traditional customs and belief.

In Udaipur, the day of Ashura is observed by carrying out the large procession of Taziyas, an effigy of Imam Hussain’s mausoleum made from paper and wood.

Tens of Taziyas from various localities and Muslim organizations took part in this procession. Young men carried the taziya on their shoulders and passed from many areas of the old city and concluded at Pichola Lake. Many non-Muslims also gave tribute to Taziya and offered flowers etc.

Significance of the Day of Ashura in Islamic History

· Allah accepted the repentance of Adam

· Allah saved Prophet Nuh and his companions in the ark (Noah’s ark)

· Allah saved Prophet Ibrahim from Fire, when Ibrahim was thrown by Nimrod

· Allah spoke directly to Prophet Musa and gave him Commandments

· Allah resorted health to Prophet Ayub

· Prophet Yusuf was reunited with his father Prophet Yaqub

· Prophet Yunus was taken out from the belly of fish

· Prophet Dawud was forgiven on this day

· Kingdom of Prophet Sulieman was restored

· Prophet Isa was raised to Heaven on this day

· Imam Hussain was martyred on this day

Within tight police security, the taziya procession was conducted in the city of Lakes today evening. The carrying of Taziya started since morning when several group of people carrying parts of taziyas gathered at one place to assemble it and then joined the main procession which started from Bhattiyani Chohta.

Taziyas passed from Bada Bazar, Ghantaghar, Jagdish Chowk and ended at the shore of Lake Pichola.
