Appallingly, no authority has ventured to come forward and answer this question, although everyone does try to point elsewhere while the buck passes on, as the agony of a more than 100 year old building continues indefinitely.

Who Owns Ghantaghar?

We had published news regarding the Clock Tower – ‘Ghantaghar’, the main clock on which is switched off since the last two years as the contactors who were given the contract to take care of the clock have terminated the contract because of various issues, one of them being monetary.

To get more information on this, UT team visited three different departments who administer and manage the city and all three of them have clearly denied any role in monitoring the Clock Tower building.

“Every such property, which is owned by the state or national government falls under Public Works Department”, says Roopkumar Khurana, Chairman, U.I.T, Udaipur.

“In any case, it cannot come under P.W.D as the State government has allotted a specific budget to the Municipal Council for taking care of such heritage buildings”, said Ashok Kumar Sharma, Executive Engineer, P.W.D.

“We have no information about the Clock Tower and if you are talking about responsibility, then it’s definitely not ours; however we initiated the Heritage Walk and Master Plan, which is the additional responsibility we are taking” said Rajni Dangi, Chairman, Municipal Council, Udaipur.

This buck passing and ignorance is resulting in a barrier to the sustainable development of the city.

If this is the condition, then we cannot blame anyone except our own misfortune for having such irresponsible governance.
