Climate Shift? Scorching Heat in Barmer, Jaisalmer in April

Experts consider this a sign of climate change, which is having a significant impact on the desert districts of the region

Weather update

Udaipur, April 15, 2025 - With the impact of the western disturbance coming to an end, a heatwave has begun to grip Rajasthan. The effects are particularly being felt in Barmer and Jaisalmer.

This time, the summer heat in the Thar Desert has shown its intense face as early as April. The temperature has already crossed 45°C, a level typically seen at the end of May. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that if this trend continues, all-time temperature records could be broken in Jaisalmer and Barmer. Experts consider this a sign of climate change, which is having a significant impact on the desert districts of the region.

According to the IMD, both districts are currently experiencing heatwave conditions, leading to a rise in daytime temperatures. Barmer recorded the highest daytime temperature in the State at 45.4°C, while Jaisalmer saw a maximum temperature of 44°C. In total, 14 cities recorded daytime temperatures exceeding 40°C. The temperature in Jaipur reached 37.6°C.

According to the IMD, parts of eastern Rajasthan - particularly the Shekhawati region, and areas in Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions - are expected to experience maximum temperatures ranging from 42°C to 44°C between April 15 and 18, with a high likelihood of heatwave conditions in some areas.

The weather across the State is expected to remain mostly dry over the next 4 to 5 days. As a result, temperatures are likely to increase by 3-4 degrees. In the western districts, maximum temperatures could reach as high as 45-46°C.
