Cloudburst in Uttarkashi Triggers Flash Floods, 50 Missing

Flash floods wash away homes, more than 20 hotels, homestays feared destroyed by the raging flood waters

Aug 5, 2025 - A major cloudburst struck Uttarkashi causing flash floods today and triggering a landslide in the State of Uttarakhand. At least 50 people are feared missing amid the widespread devastating destruction. Emergency services have been pressed into action and search and rescue mission is underway to relocate the affected and look for the missing.

Disturbing visuals show flash floods sweeping through a village and washing away houses near Harsil while panic-stricken residents can be heard screaming.

Uttarkashi police has issued a warning to residents cautioning them to stay at a safe distance from the river.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared the distressing news on X (formerly Twitter), saying,  "The news of heavy damage caused by a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) region is extremely sad and distressing. SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. In this regard, I am in constant contact with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to God for everyone's safety.”

A local told a news agency that there may be around 10-12 people buried under the debris and that around 20 to 25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away by the raging flood waters.
