Met Department issues cold wave alert for Alwar, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh and Nagaur; Fatehpur below freezing point for five straight days
Udaipur, December 16, 2024 - The cold wave in the State continued for the 11th consecutive day yesterday bringing the minimum temperatures in Rajasthan down to sub-zero levels. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this condition is expected to continue in central India with the Jaipur Meteorological Centre saying the cold wave in the State will continue until December 19.
The department has issued a cold wave alert for Alwar, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh and Nagaur. An Orange alert has been issued for Sikar until December 19. In other areas, there will continue to be fluctuations in temperature, says the Met Department. With the activation of a western disturbance in the northern regions, the impact of northern winds is diminishing, which may bring some relief from the cold wave in certain areas.
The minimum temperature in many cities of Rajasthan remained below 5°C last night. Minimum temperatures in 14 cities went below 5°C, and seven cities reported temperatures below 3°C during the night. Fatehpur in particular has been freezing for the past five days, with night temperatures dropping below freezing point. Yesterday it was recorded at minus 1.2°C while Mount Abu recorded 1.2°C. In Jaipur, the night temperature rose slightly to 7.8°C from 1.1°C. The highest maximum temperatures in the State were recorded at Barmer (28.6°C), Jodhpur (27.5°C), Chittorgarh (27.8°C) and Jalore (27.9°C).
In weather update from other parts of India, the Met Department has said that some areas of Madhya Pradesh will also experience a cold wave for the next 24 hours, while Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh and surrounding regions are likely to experience cold wave conditions from today until December 18. Delhi NCR is expected to feel a drop of 2-3°C in the minimum temperature.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a rainfall alert for several areas in South India, including Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and southern interior Karnataka. Similarly, heavy rainfall is forecast for Kerala on December 18 and 19.
