Cold Wave Sweeps Rajasthan from Dec. 9

Winds from North India after rain and snowfall cause significant drop in temperatures; Mumbai experiences coldest day in nine years

Udaipur, December 9, 2024 – Temperatures in Udaipur have started to dip following cold winds blowing across the State owing to rain and snowfall in the northern parts of India. Since last evening, residents have started to experience chilly winds. Going forward, a further dip in temperatures is expected with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) of Jaipur issuing a cold wave alert today.

The effect of cold winds is expected to intensify in Rajasthan from today. The Meteorological Center Jaipur has issued a yellow alert of cold wave in Churu today.

The Jaipur Met Dept issued a yellow alert for Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar districts on December 10, 11 and 12. The temperature is expected to fall further in the districts of north-west and eastern Rajasthan with Fatehpur Shekhawati reaching 3.2 degrees Celsius.

Yesterday, there was a sudden drop in temperatures in almost all districts of the State with Mount Abu recording a minimum temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius. For tomorrow, the Met Dept has issued a cold wave alert in Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu of Shekhawati along with Hanumangarh and Ganganagar of northern Rajasthan.

Yesterday, 15 cities in the State recorded minimum temperature below 10 degrees with the lowest temperature recorded below 5 degrees C. These include, apart from Mount Abu, Sirohi, Churu, Jodhpur, Karauli, Dholpur, Anta Baran, Bhilwara, Alwar, Chittorgarh, Ganganagar, Sangaria, Vanasthali, Dabok and Pilani.

In its latest forecast issued on December 8, the IMD also predicted a cold wave that would sweep most of northern India from today. The chill is expected to continue until December 14. This drop will bring cold wave conditions to Delhi and neighbouring northern states such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.

A western disturbance has persisted over central Pakistan and its surrounding areas leading to Delhi witnessing light rain last evening and temperatures dipping in several parts of the national capital.

Shimla saw the season’s first snowfall last night in the first in many decades.

Mumbai today experienced the coldest day in nine years, with Santa Cruz recording the lowest temperature of the season at 13.7 degrees Celsius.
