Extreme Heatwave Condition in Rajasthan

The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast indicating that Rajasthan is poised to experience another heatwave, expected to commence from May 16. This follows a brief respite brought by potential thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds (40-50 kmph) on May 13.

Some parts of Rajasthan may receive rainfall along with thunderstorms. Southern regions such as Udaipur and Jodhpur are likely to face thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and rainfall in the next one to two days.

Radhe Shyam Sharma, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, explained that the state experienced a temporary relief from the intense heatwave due to western disturbances. However, the heatwave is anticipated to make a return after May 15 or 16.

Currently, Rajasthan's average temperature ranges between 40-42 degrees Celsius, slightly normal in most parts, but with minimum temperatures in some areas reaching around 31 degrees Celsius, 2-3 degrees higher than usual.

A new Western Disturbance is projected to affect the western Himalayan region from May 17 onwards. This disturbance is expected to bring duststorms/thunderstorms with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) to isolated areas in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh today.

Additionally, strong surface winds (30-40 kmph) are expected to prevail over the plains of south Rajasthan today.

Yesterday, maximum temperatures in many parts of West Rajasthan reached 40-42 degrees Celsius. Notably, Jalore recorded the highest temperature at 42.96 degrees Celsius, while Barmer experienced 42.5 degrees Celsius. Other districts reported temperatures between 40 degrees Celsius and lower, attributed to the influence of western disturbances.

Sharma noted that temperatures would begin to rise after May 15 or 16, potentially reaching 45 degrees Celsius or higher. This could lead to heatwave-like conditions, particularly in border areas such as Barmer, Jalore, and Jaisalmer, for 4-5 consecutive days.

Over the weekend, several districts in Rajasthan experienced wind and rainfall activities. Deogarh in Rajsamand, situated in eastern Rajasthan, recorded the highest rainfall at 42 mm. These weather events, combined with gusty winds, led to a notable decrease of up to 4 degrees Celsius in both maximum and minimum temperatures across the state.
