Floods, Alerts and Overflowing Rivers: India Battles Monsoon Fury

Udaipur, Sept 8, 2025 - After triggering destruction through heavy rainfall across several States, the southwest monsoon is now preparing to retreat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the intensity of the monsoon is expected to decrease across the country starting tomorrow, September 9. However, rain activity is expected to continue in the southern, eastern, and northeastern regions even as the monsoon withdraws.

The IMD has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall until September 11 in several States, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam and parts of South India. A low-pressure system has been identified over northwestern Madhya Pradesh, extending to eastern Rajasthan, which according to the IMD, could trigger heavy downpours and strong winds across the affected regions.

Yesterday, September 7, torrential rains continued in Gujarat and western-southern Rajasthan, with up to 210 mm of rainfall recorded in various parts of both States. In Ahmedabad, the Sabarmati river overflowed, submerging the riverfront area.

Heavy to very heavy rains were also reported in the northeastern states, as well as in Konkan, Goa and various parts of northern India, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Flood rescue operations are ongoing in Punjab and Haryana. The Yamuna River remains at danger level leading to flooding from Delhi to Mathura.
