Storms cause significant damage to crops like rabi, mustard, chickpea, wheat, isabgol and barley; government to assess farmers' losses and provide compensation
Udaipur, March 1, 2025 - Owing to the effect of the western disturbance, Bikaner and Churu were hit by hailstorms yesterday. In Kangar village of Ratangarh tehsil in Churu, hailstorms damaged standing crops in the fields. There was light rain in several areas of Sri Ganganagar and Jaisalmer. Meanwhile, most districts of Rajasthan experienced overcast skies and dust storms causing the day-time temperature to drop by 2 to 5 degrees.
According to Jaipur Meteorological Department, Bikaner experienced rain with a dust storm and hailstorms occurred in many villages of Lunkaransar district. In Churu's Sadulpur and Ratangarh tehsil's Kangar village, hailstorms were reported. These hailstorms caused significant damage to crops like rabi, mustard, chickpea, wheat, isabgol and barley.
A team will carry out a survey to assess the farmers' losses and assistance will be provided based on the report, according to Sumit Godara, Food and Civil Supplies Minister.
According to the weather office, today light rain is expected in some parts of Jaipur, Bharatpur division and Shekhawati region with possible thunder and lightning. However, dry weather is likely to prevail over the next five days.
