Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai Crippling City for 4th Day

Aug 20, 2025 - Incessant rain continues to paralyse life in Mumbai for the fourth consecutive day crippling the public transport network amid flooding. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Wednesday warning of heavy rainfall in several districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, for the next 24 hours.

Many educational institutions and government offices were shut as streets are flooded with rain water submerging railways tracks. Massive traffic jams, flight disruptions and train delays/cancellations have brought life in the metro to nearly a standstill. Cars were stranded and buses diverted while around 800 people had to be rescued from two stranded monorails.

According to the authorities, at least eight people lost their lives in rain-related accidents such as electrocutions and house collapse.

Mumbai has received around 300 mm of rain in 24 hours.

According to the weekly forecast from the IMD, Mumbai will receive heavy rainfall till August 21, Thursday. However, the rainfall is expected to continue through the week.
