The incessant rains over 4 days in Udaipur and the nearby areas of the district have on one hand given relief to people and dried lands but on the other hand is raising many concerns. 

Lake Pichola’s lifeline Seesarma on Wednesday reached the level of 18 ft increasing the level of water in Pichola to 4 ft on Tuesday night. Chota Madar received heavy rainfall while Nandeshwar Channel reached 8 ft level.

The newly developed Sabarmati Dam at Kotra overflowed in the first rain on Tuesday along with Kotra Dam and Dondi Dam. Also, the Bagheri Ka Naka at Rajsamand is overflowed with 16 inch water.

The rains also brought havoc in the lives of many. A 12 year old girl died after one of the walls of her house collapsed at Parasad village and her mother sustained severe injuries. The wall of collapsed due to heavy rains on Tuesday. The dead body was shifted to mortuary.

In the Udaipur city, electricity played nuisance at many places as people suffered from blackout. The electricity supply of more than 22 villages of the district was shut down. As many as 300 trees were uprooted in the entire district leading to commuting problems. Water clogging was a usual sight at Ashok Nagar main road including the pot holes that added to the problem.

Although this is just the beginning of monsoon showers in the city, administration seemed incompetent to the people’s problems as many electricity complaints fell on deaf ears. On the other hand, the officials asserted that continuous inflow of complaints obstructed the maintenance work and so the workers had to switch off their mobile phones. Also, most of the workers on field and so were not contactable.

“Various poles have fallen down due to strong winds. The priority is to fix the main lines and restart them. It is an appeal to the general public to keep patience. The continuous rains and winds are disrupting the repair work. Despite of rains, the workers are on their toes, fixing the problems,” said KS Sisodia, Superintendent Engineer (Nagar Nigam).
