IMD Alert for Heavy Rainfall in Some States

UdaipurTimes, Sept 24, 2026 - The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange and Red alerts for heavy rainfall  in many parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the next four days. This is following the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the form of a deep depression. The IMD says the system may cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast by the morning of September 24.

Heavy rain is also likely in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, with extremely heavy rainfall possible in some areas.
Meanwhile, the monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of Rajasthan, including the Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Ajmer and Bharatpur divisions, signalling the end of an erratic and deficit season. It still remains over some districts in southeastern Rajasthan.

On another note, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned of changes in normal temperature and rainfall patterns globally owing to the El Niño currently strengthening. According to the WMO, developing El Niño conditions may influence global circulation patterns with an “exceptionally high likelihood of nearly 100%” moving into February 2027. The current El Niño is becoming one of the strongest to ever be recorded since record keeping, says WMO.

“This is the first time that a WMO El Niño/La Niña Update has been so unequivocal, reflecting the strong agreement within WMO’s extensive network,” a WMO forecast read.

This pattern is likely to impact India, too, leading to above normal temperatures during the upcoming winter season. The IMD will factor this into its winter forecast to be released later this year.
