April 16, 2025 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has brought good cheer for the country currently reeling under a heatwave in most parts. For the second consecutive year, the monsoon is expected to be abundant, with rainfall likely to be above normal.

In its official forecast, the IMD has said that during the monsoon of 2025, rainfall from June to September is expected to be 105% of the Long Period Average (LPA). The IMD considers rainfall between 96% and 104% as normal. Typically, the country receives 87 cm (100%) of rainfall during the four monsoon months, but this year it is expected to reach 91.4 cm.

The IMD has been forecasting the monsoon since 1988 and over these 37 years, from 1988 to 2024, its predictions have had a 50-50 success ratio.
