May 24, 2025 - Monsoon has arrived in India….eight days early!
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of monsoon in the country with the southwest monsoon hitting Kerala, today, May 24.
This year the State is seeing the “earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, when it began on May 23,” IMD data says.
The normal pattern is that Kerala receives its first monsoon showers by June 1. And then the southwest monsoon moves over to other parts of the country by July 8. As per the IMD, in 2024 the monsoon had arrived in the south Indian State on May 30, June 8 in 2023; May 29 in 2022; June 3 in 2021; June 1 in 2020; June 8 in 2019; and May 29 in 2018.
Typically, it starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws from the country completely by October 15.
Other than Kerala, the monsoon has already covered Lakshadweep, Mahe, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Mizoram, as per IMD.
