Favorable weather patterns, including wind shifts and cloud cover, hint at early monsoon, says IMD; an above-average monsoon predicted this year
May 14, 2025 - There are indications of an early onset of monsoon in the country and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the arrival of monsoon in Rajasthan between June 18 and 20. Prior to that, several States may receive rainfall.
The IMD has said there are indicators of the monsoon’s early arrival in the country, including an increase in Westerly winds over the southern Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea. Weather conditions over most parts of the southern Arabian Sea and southern Bay of Bengal will be favourable for the monsoon’s advance in the coming 3-4 days and it could reach Kerala by May 27. The official onset of the monsoon in India is declared when it reaches Kerala.
Typically, the monsoon arrives in Kerala around June 1. If it arrives earlier this year, it would be for the first time since 2009, when it made landfall on May 23.
The southwest monsoon usually covers the entire country by July 8.
Monsoon clouds reached the southern part of the Bay of Bengal and the Nicobar Islands yesterday, May 13. Over the past two days, the Nicobar Islands have experienced moderate to heavy rainfall. In Chhattisgarh, scattered to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds is likely until May 15. Madhya Pradesh may see rainfall until May 16. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to receive rain between May 14 and 15, Gangetic West Bengal on May 14 and Jharkhand on May 15–16.
The IMD earlier forecast that this monsoon season will bring above-normal rainfall, and dismissed concerns about El Niño conditions.
