Oct 31, 2025 - After the monsoon season, October rainfall in India has once again broken the record for the highest precipitation in 20 years. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the average rainfall for October over the past two decades has been around 74 mm. This year, however, the country received 106 mm of rainfall — 44% above average. A total of 20 States and Union Territories recorded higher-than-normal rainfall. The last time October saw such heavy rain was in 2019, when 109 mm (47% above average) was recorded.
Frequent formation of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea caused widespread rain across coastal regions, central India, northwest and southern parts of the country. Cyclonic storm Montha led to flood-like situations in several coastal States.
Meteorologists say the heavy post-monsoon rainfall will influence the upcoming winter season. Northwestern States have already begun to feel the onset of cold, and experts predict that this winter could be exceptionally harsh, with temperatures possibly dropping between 0°C and –5°C in parts of north and central India.
