September Could Be Wetter Than Normal, Warns IMD

Udaipur, Sept 10, 2025 - The spell of heavy rainfall in the State is expected to subside over the coming week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in most parts of Rajasthan rain activity is expected to decrease significantly, with only light showers possible at a few isolated locations.

Meanwhile, some areas recorded heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. The highest rainfall was reported in Mount Abu, which received 250 millimetres of rain.

In Rajasthan, torrential rains have damaged 30 to 40% of kharif crops on average, and regions like Sawai Madhopur faced crop losses as high as 90%, particularly affecting soybean, guar, moong and bajra fields

The IMD has warned that September could be wetter than normal, with rainfall exceeding 109% of the long-period average — notably delaying the typical withdrawal of monsoon. Uttarakhand, south Haryana, Delhi and north Rajasthan are likely to receive heavy rainfall during the month.

Himalayan States and territories — including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and the populous agricultural hub of Punjab — have been among the hardest hit by this year’s above-average rainfall.

Experts warn that climate change is fuelling the worsening pattern of extreme rainfall events.
