Udaipur, May 20, 2025 – A thunderstorm hit the city late yesterday (May 19) afternoon causing significant damage to power lines across Udaipur because of the strong winds and rain. As per reports, more than 50 electricity poles collapsed in different parts of the city and an equal number of trees were uprooted. As a result, power was cut off in more than half of the city and more than 50 residential colonies remained without power late into the night.

The scorching heat that persisted until afternoon took a sudden turn around 3:30-4:00 pm when the city was lashed by a thunderstorm with sharp gusts of wind at 47 km/hour that sent debris flying around. Boats on Fateh Sagar rocked dangerously and trees came crashing down.

The sudden downpour brought immense relief from the heat of the day. However, the storm knocked out power in several areas, plunging neighbourhoods into darkness for hours. It was a classic pre-monsoon thunderstorm - short, sharp and dramatic - leaving both chaos and coolness in its wake.

Engineers and staff worked through the night to restore electricity. According to reports, power supply to 11kV lines was restored by late night, but internal areas and individual complaints remained unresolved. The Madhuban sub-division area was said to have suffered the most damage to power infrastructure.

Recorded temperatures in key cities - Pilani 46.4°C, Churu 46.0°C, Bikaner 45.1°C, Vanasthali 45.1°C, Sri Ganganagar 45.0°C, Jaipur 44.6°C, Jaisalmer 44.2°C.

Meanwhile, as per the forecast of the India Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of thunderstorms, light rainfall and gusty winds in the afternoons until May 25 in parts of Udaipur, Kota and Bharatpur divisions.

Over the next 4-5 days, a heatwave is likely to affect parts of the Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions. Border areas of Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions may experience strong winds for 3-4 days. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by dust storms are expected at isolated places in Bikaner division today May 20 and 21.
