Nov 29, 2025 - India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red alert for extremely heavy rain over the next 48 hours in Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Ditwah nears India after wreaking havoc in Sri Lanka. The cyclone has weakened after crossing Sri Lanka but is still expected to cause heavy rainfall with strong, gale-force winds over north Tamil Nadu and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coasts.

As per the IMD, the storm is currently moving towards south-west Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing out into the seas on the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Andhra Pradesh coasts and southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal until December 1.

Meanwhile, Chennai has cancelled 54 flights as it braces for the cyclone. Schools and colleges were closed on Saturday in several districts of the State even as authorities are on high alert. Moderate rainfall and overcast skies were reported across Chennai Saturday morning.

The death toll in the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka rose to 80 people. India has sent relief material to the cyclone-ravaged country.
