Jhalawar battered by winds and torrential rain; Ganganagar, Pilani record 46.2°C; Rajasthan’s heatwave intensifies as dust storms loom
Udaipur, May 19, 2025 – The heat suddenly surged on city residents on May 18 after a brief spell of rain and cool weather. However, data show there was no sharp rise in temperature and, according to the weather department, the maximum temperature on May 18 was 38.6°C, which is 1.6°C below normal, while the minimum temperature was 27.4°C, 0.9°C above normal. Yet, the strong sun and humidity caused considerable discomfort.
Across Rajasthan, while many districts were troubled by intense heat, a few cities witnessed spells of heavy rainfall. Parts of Udaipur, Ajmer, and Kota divisions experienced thunderstorms and light showers in the afternoon. In Jhalawar district, late on May 17 and again on May 18 evening, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds blowing at speeds of 70 to 80 km/hour lashed the region. The highest recorded rainfall was 27 mm in Jhalrapatan.
Some parts of western Rajasthan experienced heatwave conditions. In seven cities, the daytime temperature crossed 44°C. Meanwhile, the highest temperature of 46.2°C was recorded in Sriganganagar and Pilani. The night-time minimum temperature in five cities exceeded 31°C, with the highest night-time minimum recorded at 31.4°C in Sriganganagar and Churu. Jaipur recorded a maximum temperature of 44°C, with a rise of 0.8°C over the past 24 hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and light rain between May 19 and 25 in some parts of Udaipur, Kota and Bharatpur divisions.
According to the weather centre, the heatwave is likely to persist over the next 4-5 days in parts of Bikaner, Jodhpur divisions, and the Shekhawati region. Some parts of Bikaner division may also experience warm nights. Border areas of Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions are expected to witness strong surface-level dusty winds for the next 3-4 days. Thunderstorms accompanied by winds are also likely in parts of Bikaner division on May 20–21.
