IMD radars in Udaipur as well as Bikaner and Jodhpur; to aid in aviation and climate monitoring; will cover a 250-kilometre radius
Udaipur, April 21, 2025 – The Indian Meteorological Department is planning to install Doppler radars in major cities including Udaipur, Bikaner and Jodhpur. These radars will cover a 250-kilometre radius and provide accurate weather updates, including warnings for thunderstorms and strong winds, up to three hours in advance.
Doppler radars, which are particularly useful in issuing weather forecasts, employ the Doppler Effect to estimate an object's radial velocity, or its motion towards or away from the radar.
Udaipur will now have access to more precise and advanced weather forecasts. In addition, the radars will also predict the intensity and direction of rainfall.
Currently, such a radar is only available at the Meteorological Center in Jaipur, which is insufficient to cover the entire state of Rajasthan. Presently, weather forecasts and warnings for other regions rely on satellite data, automatic weather stations, and various observatories. Once the radar is installed in Udaipur, a large portion of south Rajasthan will benefit from its coverage.
The system will allow area-specific weather predictions, indicating which parts of the city may receive rain and which might remain dry.
The Doppler radar will also significantly enhance accuracy for aviation operations. Airports will receive early warnings about wind direction and speed, aiding in safer and more precise flight operations. With the help of the Wind Profiler System, not only will aircraft performance and safety improve, but it will also support meteorological research efforts.
