Deadly Winter Storm Paralyses US
Thousands of flights cancelled, thousands left without electricity; States brace for fresh influx of Arctic blast
Jan 27, 2026 – The deadly winter storm on Sunday and Monday (January 25-26) in the US has left several dead and literally paralysed the eastern part of the country. At least 25 States declared a state of emergency even as citizens struggled with digging out more than a foot of snow, schools turned to online teaching and thousands of flights were cancelled.
Power outages across some of the southern States hit residents badly because of the below-freezing temperatures and no heating. New York City recorded 8 to 15 inches (20 to 38 cm) of snow, marking its snowiest day in years.
According to weather reports, the storm is drifting away from the East Coast into the Atlantic but an influx of Arctic air was rushing in from Canada which would prolong below-freezing temperatures for several more days. The bitter cold is expected to continue into early February, particularly in places already covered in snow and ice. Forecasters say another winter storm may hit the East Coast over the weekend.
More than 12,000 flight disruptions were reported in the US on January 26. Around 3,500 flights were cancelled while on January 25, around 11,600 cancellations were reported. Faced with icy conditions at airports, airlines were struggling to resume normal operations.
