Udaipur’s Sajjangarh Park Set to Welcome Giraffes Soon
Udaipur’s Sajjangarh Biological Park prepares for giraffes; Rs 2.7 crore project underway with enclosure construction to finish before monsoon
Udaipur, April 16, 2026 - After introducing a lion safari and reptile house, preparations to bring giraffes to Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary (Biological Park) are now in the final stage.
For the Rs 2.70 crore project, the Udaipur Development Authority has allocated Rs 2 crore. In the first phase, a giraffe enclosure and shelter are being constructed at a cost of Rs 1.70 crore. The Forest Department has completed the tender process, and work on the ground — such as land leveling and enclosure lining — is set to begin this week. The goal is to complete the enclosure before the onset of the monsoon.
The enclosure will be developed near Gate No. 3 of the sanctuary, covering around three bighas (approximately 6,200 square metres). A 9-foot-wide and 450-metre-long pathway will be built for visitors. There will be a 15,000 sq ft holding area for nighttime rest and a 61,000 sq ft display area for the giraffes. Feeding structures will also be designed according to the giraffes’ height.
Under the animal exchange programme, a pair of giraffes (male and female) may be brought from Mysore Zoo. Currently, giraffes are also present in zoos in Patna and Kolkata, but Mysore is considered the most likely source. The exchange process will begin once the enclosure is complete.
