With the onset of Monsoon season, the occurrences of snake bites in and around Udaipur are increasing. Udaipur, being home to four venomous snakes, is being hit by continuous rains which according to experts is causing the reptiles to come out of their holes.

Padam Singh, member of Wildlife and Street Animal Rescue Society said that the areas that are warmer like kitchen, backyards and fields behind homes are seeing a rise in snake sightings. He says that he receives 15 to 20 calls each day and over the past few weeks, the snake bites instances have hiked.

With such situations, the members are holding awareness campaigns especially in schools to help people differentiate between the dangerous and non-dangerous species.

Padam Singh informs, “The division is home to some 35 varieties of snake however, only 4 of them are poisonous and required to be feared from. Russel Viper, Saw Scaled Viper, Krait and Cobra are the venomous species of snakes whose bites can prove fatal; people do not have to fear the rest.”

To avoid the chances of getting bitten, he asked the people to be careful while cleaning up debris, look under objects or picking up things with hands. In Udaipur, most of the snakes, other than those in the old walled city, are venomous.

Udaipur being surrounded by Aravalli range offers suitable habitat to the varieties which are found in plenty in this area. Instances of snake sightings have been reported from outskirt villages like Iswal, Badi, Gogunda, Goverdhan Vilas, Savina etc.
