Swift Action Saves Mugger Crocodile Thanks to Villagers’ Alertness
Aug 4, 2025 - In a successful joint operation led by Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and Wildlife SOS, a 5-foot-long mugger crocodile was successfully rescued from a pond in Marthara village located in Etah district. It was later found to be healthy and released in Chambal River after a thorough medical assessment.
The crocodile was first spotted by local residents in a village pond, after which they promptly alerted the nearby Forest Department office. Recognising the need for specialised assistance, forest officials contacted the Wildlife SOS Rapid Response Unit on their emergency helpline (+91 9917109666).
A skilled three-member team from Wildlife SOS, equipped with necessary rescue equipment and a trap cage, was immediately dispatched to the location. After a quick assessment of the situation, the team strategically set up the trap cage with bait inside. The team waited patiently for hours and finally the crocodile turned up inside the cage and was safely captured.
Following the successful rescue, the Wildlife SOS veterinary team conducted a health examination of the crocodile. Finding it fit for release, the animal was transported under supervision and released in Chambal River — a natural habitat ideal for the species.
Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS, said, "Incidents like this highlight the importance of villagers’ awareness and timely intervention by agencies. We are thankful to the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department for their quick response and for partnering with us to ensure the safety of both the crocodile as well as the local residents."
"The mugger crocodile, though often misunderstood, plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems," shared Baiju Raj MV, Director Conservation Projects at Wildlife SOS, adding, "With water bodies nearby, crocodiles often venture into fields. Our trained rescue teams are always on standby to manage such situations with care and professionalism."
"The successful rescue was the result of swift response of the villagers, and teamwork," said Kamal Kant Jain, Range Forest Officer, Etah. "We appreciate Wildlife SOS for their expertise and quick intervention, which made this rescue safe and effective."
