After years of research and field trials, Udaipur Protocol, a modified technique developed from the prevalent hormone therapy will treat infertility in cows and buffaloes. The technique has proved to be cheaper and faster with as high as 60% conception rate.
Encouraged by this achievement, a proposal for establishing a Center for Excellence has been sent by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Badgaon for treating, training and research on Bovine infertility.
More than 50% breedable cattle and buffalo are infertile, non-productive and non-pregnant. Animal Husbandry Department and KVK had been working on problems of infertility and repeat breeding in bovines since 15 years. KVK with a dairy having more than 150 cattle heads provided a good platform for undertaking innovative treatment strategy.
Infertility treatment in cattle was taken up in villages for past 4 years under various projects of KVK in selected groups in systematic manner and the results were found to be highly encouraging, informed Dr. Bhupendra Bharadwaj, Dy Director of the Regional Disease Diagnostic Centre of the Animal Husbandry Department.
Dr. Chandra Shekhar Bhatnagar, a senior vet said, “The modified technique is less time consuming as cattle in entire village could be treated within a span on one month.”
“More than 800 vets across the state have been given training on the protocol that are successfully implementing it in their respective areas benefitting thousands of villagers,” said Praful Bhatnagar of the KVK.
