Udaipur Wildlife: In a unique conservation effort, the Sajjangarh Biological Park in Udaipur has designated Tuesdays for fasting among its wildlife residents. This initiative, in line with directives from the Central Zoo Authority, aims to emulate the natural feeding patterns of wild animals and promote their overall health.
Fasting Day for Wildlife
Every Tuesday, the park remains closed for tourists as part of the fasting arrangement. This day allows the wildlife to abstain from food, mirroring their natural behavior in the wild where prey availability is not guaranteed daily.
Conservation Importance
With 23 different species, including tigers, Asian lions, leopards, and various others, the park recognizes the significance of fasting for maintaining wildlife health and effective park management.
Maintenance Activities
On fasting days, the park conducts essential maintenance tasks such as cleaning enclosures, display areas, and off-display zones. These activities ensure a clean and conducive environment for the wildlife.
Veterinary Insights
Dr. Himanshu Vyas, the park's veterinarian, underscores the importance of fasting based on the natural feeding habits of wild animals. He explains that fasting for a day each week aligns with their physical nature and contributes to their overall well-being.
Continuation of Tradition
The practice of weekly fasting for wildlife dates back to the days of the Gulab Bagh Zoo, which preceded the Sajjangarh Biological Park. Even after the transformation in 2015, this tradition has been upheld to prioritize wildlife health and conservation efforts.
