Making progress on the proposed Low Carbon Mobility Plan, a draft report has been prepared by a private company hired for surveying traffic and road conditions of Udaipur. It may be noted that the project is backed by United Nations.

The survey and research was completed in one and half year and focused on different measures for preventing pollution caused by growing number of vehicles on road.

Ranjan Jyoti Dutta, senior officer of Urban Mass Transit, a Delhi based company presented the draft through slideshows. Many areas of Udaipur, including Surajpol, have been found to be under heavy air pollution.

Senior officials from departments including UIT, Traffic Police, Pollution Control Board, District Transport Office, Airport Authority etc were present in the meeting. The meeting was chaired by R.P Sharma, Secretary UIT and Mayor Rajni Dangi.

Ranjan Jyoti Dutta assured that the final report will be presented in next 10-15 days and this report will form the base for final implementation.

Dutta also commented on public negligence on P.U.C (Pollution under Control) certification in Udaipur. He questioned that if PUC is mandatory then why is it not implemented strictly. Dutta, amongst other recommendations, suggested that projects like Alwar Vahini should be started in Udaipur. Under project Alwar Vahini, old and heavily polluting vehicles used by unorganized public transporters were replaced by low emitting vehicles.

Airport Authority officials recommended a special shuttle service from airport to city for passengers to lower the usage of taxi and other private vehicles. Other suggestions like encouraging cycling for local citizens and introducing battery operated auto rickshaws were also discussed.

Three cities of India including Udaipur, Vishakhapatnam and Rajkot have been selected under Low Carbon Mobility Plan.
