Finally! Nehru Garden Reopens... with a New Look

After an official inauguration, Nehru Garden opens to tourists; to boost Udaipur’s night tourism

Udaipur, Sept 5, 2025 - One of Udaipur’s most cherished landmarks, Nehru Garden, located in the heart of the popular Fateh Sagar, finally reopened to the public today, September 5, after a four-year-long wait. Locals and tourists got a first glimpse of the garden’s new look following extensive renovation which had started after its transfer from the Udaipur Nagar Nigam to the Udaipur Development Authority (UDA).

As part of the 2024-25 State Budget, several development works were undertaken by UDA, including civil construction, pathways, water bodies, heritage structures and horticultural upgrades. Additionally, the level of the garden was elevated to match the lake’s maximum water level in order to prevent future submersion.

The garden was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha MP Chunnilal Garasiya, Lok Sabha MP Dr Manna Lal Rawat, Udaipur City MLA Tarachand Jain and Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena in the presence of other dignitaries, public representatives and government officials. Attendees included DIG (Stamps) Rajeev Dwivedi and UDA SE Amit Mathur.

The grand reopening began with the inauguration of a newly-constructed jetty near Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Udyan on Rani Road, followed by a boat ride carrying the dignitaries to the garden. There, they performed a ceremonial puja and officially reopened the garden. They also laid the foundation stone for a musical fountain and complete façade lighting of the garden.

UDA Commissioner Rahul Jain, Secretary Hemendra Nagar, and Special Officer Jitendra Ojha welcomed the guests. During the visit, the dignitaries emphasised that tourism is the soul of Udaipur, and the reopening of Nehru Garden will allow people to experience the beauty of Fateh Sagar in a unique way.

Commissioner Jain and District Collector Namit Mehta announced that the garden will initially remain open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. However, once the musical fountain and façade lighting are completed in the next 2-3 months, the garden will remain open until 9:30 pm thereby promoting night tourism in Udaipur.

Electric boats will ferry visitors from the new jetty with a focus on maintaining environmental sustainability. Additionally, a night food court is also proposed on Rani Road. This is expected to establish the area as a new tourism hub therefore reducing visitor pressure on the main Fateh Sagar promenade.

Constructed around 1967, Nehru Garden is spread across approximately 2 hectares in the middle of Fateh Sagar. Since its inception, it had become a favourite destination for both locals and tourists.
