Udaipur Receives Wetland City Certificate at Delhi Ceremony
Udaipur, September 9, 2025 — Udaipur has officially received its certificate of recognition as a Wetland City from the Ramsar Convention. The certificate was awarded during a ceremony held in New Delhi on Tuesday, September 9. Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, presented certificates to Udaipur and Indore, both of which have been recognised globally as Wetland Cities by Ramsar Conservation.
UNESCO’s Ramsar Convention had in January this year announced the inclusion of Udaipur and Indore in the list of internationally recognised Wetland Cities.
At the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP15) from July 23 to 31, 2025, in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), certificates and letters of accreditation were issued to 31 newly-designated Wetland Cities from around the world. As part of that process, a formal ceremony was held at Paryavaran Bhawan in New Delhi on September 9 during which the certificates were officially handed over.
Owing to heavy rainfall and flood-like conditions in the Udaipur district, Namit Mehta, Administrator of the Udaipur Nagar Nigam and District Collector, chose not to attend the event in New Delhi out of concern for local public issues. Alwar Collector Dr Artika Shukla accepted the certificate on behalf of Udaipur.
