Cracking down on the illicit business of cricket betting, police has arrested several accused from different parts of the city and seized thousands of rupees, mobile phones, computers and other instrument used for gambling.

Cracking down on the illicit business of cricket betting, police has arrested several accused from different parts of the city and seized thousands of rupees, mobile phones, computers and other instrument used for gambling.

13 people were arrested by Dhan Mandi, Surajpol, Bhopalpura, Pratap Nagar and Hiran Magri Police Stations and Rs.38,875 recovered from the suspects.

Dhan Mandi police raided a shop and arrested two people for allegedly indulging in betting. Rs.30,090 and 5 mobile phones were seized. The accused Kamlesh Jain and Kamal Nagda were operating from their shop Jay Instrument, situated in the old city area of Bhaiji Raj ka Kund.

The accused confessed to their involvement in betting since last one month. They also confessed to betting in the matches between India v/s South Africa, Pakistan v/s West Indies and today’s England v/s Australia cricket match. They were dealing with the other bookies through internet.

Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing crackdown on small scale betting (not necessarily related with cricket), quite a few arrests were made throughout the city.

Surajpol Police arrested three other bookies, namely, Akbar Husain, Chandra Prakash and Amjad Khan. Police recovered Rs.2000 from Akbar and Rs.1600 from Chandra Prakash and his associate Amjad khan.

Another accused, Ramu Kayast, resident of Savina was arrested with Rs 1600.

Bhopalpura Police arrested seven accused in four different crackdowns. Munna Khan, Jitendra Singh and Dipesh Gameti were arrested with Rs. 2855 rupees; Narayan Lal Mochi was arrested with Rs 430; Abdul Sattar and his associate Irfan Khan were arrested with Rs 840; and Rajesh Meena was arrested with Rs 310.

At Pratap nagar Police Station, Mithun Meena was arrested with Rs 110 rupees and Nana Lal Salvi was arrested with Rs 90.

Hiran Magri Police also made two arrests with a recovery of Rs 550.
