Like every criminal has a background, 40-year-old P. Ramesh Prajapat (in photo above), the mastermind who confessed to executing crimes that earned him nearly Rs. 2 Crores has a long and interesting life story too.
Resident of Rudrapur, Deoria (UP), Prajapat was arrested with four of his associates while they were trying to fool an Udaipur based doctor in the name of gifting him a fake Health Insurance Policy. Prajapat was arrested from Bhilwara on 25th April with two of his gang members while three others were arrested from Udaipur.
This is not the first time when Prajapat has been nabbed by the Police; earlier too he was jailed in U.P and Maharashtra.
Working as a Petty Officer in the Indian Navy for 15 years, Prajapat took retirement and was later conned by a Nigerian woman, which made him penniless. To pay hotel bills, Prajapat bluffed a Kanpur based businessman for which he was caught by the police and served 6 months in Jail.
Police officers addressing media: from (R) S.P Hariprasad Sharma, RPS Officer Swati Sharma and Dy. S.P Subhash Mishra.
During that period, he met another convict in Jail who taught him better ways to do crime and from a retired serviceman, Ramesh Prajapat turned into a professional conman.
His career of organised crime started from Dehradun where he fooled three doctors for Rs.60 Lacs and got Rs.16 Lac as his share of booty.
For several years, Prajapat continuously targeted doctors, formed his own gang and used to change locations from one city to another. He committed several frauds in Bariely, Kolkata, Bhatinda, Mumbai and Aurangabad and was also arrested by the Mumbai police but every time he found some or the other way to secure his release.
Prajapat who is well versed in English, Hindi, Marathi and Telgu also owns a school in U.P.
He revealed his own story to Udaipur police during interrogation.
Seized objects including electronic gadgets, id cards and envelops.
Police has seized more than a dozen mobile phones, plenty of SIM cards, one laptop, one tablet, a web camera and more than 60-65 fake envelopes of BSNL, fake seals of BNSL, offer letters with fake signatures of authorities of BSNL and a few proposal letters and more than a dozen fake ID cards of Senior Accountants, National Human Rights Commission, ID Cards of BSNL and UGC.
Accused Brijesh Tiwari, Munna Sharma, Mangru Prajapati and Suresh Nisad were arrested with Ramesh Prajapat.
Why Doctors as a Prey?
Prajapat used to hate doctors and was of the opinion that they are rich and greedy; the reason for his mindset is another story where he lost his father just because he could not manage to pay fees for surgery to a doctor. Since then, Prajapat started targeting only doctors. Secondly, he used to believe that any doctor who has been fooled by him will not approach the police out of embarrassment.
Modes Operandi
First, Prajapat used to call a doctor using a fake identity of any organization and then explain to them the scheme of Health insurance, etc. If the doctor agreed to his plan, he sent the proposal letter with his associate.
After getting a positive response from the doctor, the next step was to send an allotment letter and ask the doctor to give the amount of commission (bribe) to his man against the contract.
Prajapat never exposed himself at the place of offence.
Why Udaipur?
Prajapat told police that he heard people of Rajasthan are very gentle and get easily trapped. But, he was partially mistaken and got trapped by the Police.
What was next?
The gang intended to move towards Gujarat after committing crimes in Rajasthan’s Udaipur and Bhilwara areas.
The Udaipur police team headed by DYSP Subhash Mishra, RPS Swati Shrama, C.I Satish Meena under the Supervision of S.P Hariprasad Sharma with their counterparts in Bhilwara nabbed the accused.
