The incident of communal riots that occurred earlier last night have resulted in a continuing tense situation in Pratapgarh and the Police is keeping a vigil to ensure that the episode does not spill over to neighboring areas, specially Udaipur.
Late last night, after a function to commemorate the occasion of Makar Sankranti culminated in Kotdi, Pratapgarh; an altercation took the shape of communal riots in which 3 persons were killed and 7 were injured.
The local chapter of a community had organized this function; a heated argument after which, led to an altercation. Weapons were drawn, and a group of people in the vicinity belonging to nearby Mohera village got dragged into the fight.
A 45year old man, a 32 year old man and a 29 year old man died during the clashes yesterday. One died on the spot, while the other died on the way to hospital. The third deceased died during treatment. Two of the deceased belonged to Mohera and the third was from Kotda. The 7 persons who were injured, where also brought to the MB Hospital.
Subsequently, today morning, when the news of the clash was circulated in the local newspapers, a large of people from the community specific gathered at the MB Hospital Mortuary. Members of the Rajput community raised demands for the persons who were victims of yesterday’s clashes.
The Mewar Kshatriya Mahasabha, under the leadership of BS Kanawat, President, along with other members presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister of the state, demanding compensation. Their four point memorandum asked for the following:
The memorandum also demanded that if the demands were not agreed on paper, the bodies of the deceased will not be taken away from the Mortuary.
As per latest reports, the members have been reassured by government that compensation claims to an extent of Rs. 5 lac per deceased shall be met and other monies will be arranged through public support for the victims.
Since the situation still remains tense in the affected area, the IG Udaipur region is still in the area and the curfew is continuing, as per latest reports.
