NIRF 2025: IIT Madras Leads India’s Top Institutions
Education Ministry announces India’s top universities and colleges across 17 categories; 14,163 institutions participated in national ranking
Sept 5, 2025 - The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings were released on September 4 by the Union Ministry of Education. The rankings were announced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In the Overall Category, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has once again secured the top position, retaining its rank from 2024. Following it are the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru at second place and IIT Bombay at third.
In the Top Management Institutes category, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad ranked first. Among Engineering Institutes, IIT Madras led the list, and in the Medical category, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi secured the top spot.
This year, rankings were released in 17 different categories, covering institutions such as universities, colleges, research institutes, engineering, management, pharmacy and medical institutes, among others.
A total of 14,163 higher education institutions across the country participated in the ranking process. The southern region had the highest number of participants at 5,268 institutions, followed by 4,702 from western India, 2,304 from northern India, and 1,889 from eastern India.
