India Sees Sharp Rise in QS World University Rankings

IIT Delhi tops in India followed by IIT Bombay; India is now the fourth globally in QS World University Rankings 2026

June 20, 2025 - The QS World University Rankings 2026 has released its latest edition of ranking for higher education institutions globally and this year nearly half of the Indian institutions listed in the rankings have improved their positions. Issued by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the list this time features 54 Indian institutions which is a significant jump from 46 in 2025 and 45 in 2024.

This achievement of an all-time high also makes India the fourth most represented country worldwide, after the US, UK and China.

IIT Delhi has been declared the top university in India, securing the 123rd position globally with an overall score of 65.5. It is jointly ranked with the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. IIT Bombay is ranked 129th globally, placing it second in India, while IIT Madras secured the 180th spot, making it the third Indian institute in the top 200 globally. These three institutions are India’s representatives in the global top 200.

Other Indian institutions have also earned notable positions in the rankings:

  • IIT Kharagpur is ranked 215th,
  • IISc Bangalore is ranked 219th,
  • IIT Kanpur is ranked 222nd. 

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to dominate the global list, maintaining its number one spot for the 14th consecutive year with a perfect overall score of 100. In the second and third spots globally are the Imperial College London and Stanford University respectively.
