The cane and bamboo craft originates from Agartala area of Tripura. Suresh Chand Das is practicing the art form from last 35 years; he is the person who has presented the art form in various areas of India as well as at foreign countries like Dubai, Germany, Greece, Thailand, Japan etc.

The Cane and Bamboo craft originates from Agartala area of Tripura. Suresh Chand Das is practicing the art form from last 35 years; he is the person who has presented the art form in various areas of India as well as at foreign countries like Dubai, Germany, Greece, Thailand, Japan etc.

He has trained around 100 artists through the ATS Scheme. He has won the National and State award in 1993.

Suresh said that they use special type of Bamboos namely Paura, Bamboo,Makhal Bamboo and Boom Bamboo which are grown at their village in Agartala which is rich quality Bamboo, good for making furniture and other items.

Suresh informed that their hilly frontier of Tripura State has a unique tradition in Bamboo craft; the tribe forming an integral part of the population have a variety of tribal crafts by using bamboo and cane which are often associated with their social and religious life.

Different stages are involved in weaving, which includes collection of bamboo, cutting, sizing and making venear and strips.  Thereafter hair thin strips are made by using Dao or knife for finer weaves to create a final product.
