Udaipur, January 4, 2025 - A new respiratory virus called HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is spreading in China. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, but there are no signs of a major surge in India yet. Experts say it is too early to draw conclusions.

HMPV Virus Spreads in China

The HMPV virus has been reported in China, and several media reports suggest it is spreading rapidly. Hospitals and crematories in some areas are reportedly overwhelmed. Social media videos show crowded hospitals, with multiple viruses, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID, circulating together.

Indian Health Authorities Respond

Indian health agencies are watching the situation carefully. There have been no major increases in respiratory infections in India so far. Atul Goel, Director-General of Health Services, assured that the country's hospitals are well-prepared for any increase in cases. He said there are enough beds and oxygen supplies.

Symptoms of the Virus

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), common symptoms of HMPV include a cough, runny or stuffy nose, fever, sore throat, and wheezing or difficulty breathing in severe cases. In some situations, the infection can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia, or worsen asthma.

Health officials in Bengal are also keeping a close watch on the situation. They are coordinating with the health ministry to be ready if any countermeasures are needed. Doctors in Kolkata have stated that HMPV is generally not a serious virus. City hospitals have already treated several patients this winter. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) is monitoring respiratory infections and seasonal influenza carefully.
