Karnataka Mandates One Paid Menstrual Leave Per Month for Working Women
Under this new policy by Karnataka, women aged 18-52 in all sectors are eligible, no medical certificate required; first State in India to do so
Nov 15, 2025 - Karnataka has announced one paid period leave a month for all women employees aged 18 to 52 in a move which is largely being seen as a progressive one by any State. Although there are limited versions of it in Bihar, Odisha and Kerala, but Karnataka is the first State in the country to provide this leave to women in all sectors of employment. Bihar and Odisha offer two days per month to women in the government sector, while Kerala has sanctioned menstrual leave to staff in industrial training institutes (ITI) and universities.
Under this new policy in Karnataka, women working in both government and private companies and within the specified age group can take one day of menstrual leave every month. No medical certificate will be required to avail this nor can this leave be carried forward. Hence, the employee will have to encash the leave every month.
The order says, “Employers have been directed to provide 12 paid leaves per year to all women employees aged 18-52 in establishments coming under Factories Act, 1948, Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, Plantation Workers Act, 1951, Beedi Cigar Workers (condition of employment) Act, 1966 and Motor Vehicle Workers Act, 1961.”
