October 28, 2024 - Under the Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to introduce health insurance for persons 70 years of age and above tomorrow, October 29. An official source said the PM may also roll out a U-WIN platform, created to provide an electronic record for routine vaccinations.

Last month, the Union Cabinet chaired by the PM had passed a proposal for a major expansion of the world’s largest public health insurance that offers a cashless cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per year for hospitalisation for all senior citizens aged 70 years and more. Under the scheme, every individual, irrespective of his or her socio-economic status, will be eligible for the Ayushman card.

There will be an additional shared top-up cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per year for families with senior citizens already covered by the Ayushman Bharat scheme. And those not covered under the scheme but have senior citizens will benefit with a shared cover of Rs 5 lakh per year.

Other than the above two projects, the PM will launch multiple other health projects totalling Rs 12,850 crore.

This announcement is likely to be made tomorrow, on the occasion of the ninth Ayurveda Day and the birth anniversary of Dhanvantari, considered the god of medicine.
