Udaipur, January 13, 2025 - India’s first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) was reported in Rajasthan. A baby girl from Baran district tested positive for the virus on October 9, 2024, while being treated at JK Lon Hospital, Kota. The baby, who is now six months old, has fully recovered.
Timeline of Events
The Union government earlier said the first HMPV cases were found in two infants in Bengaluru on January 3, 2024.
However, the Baran case shows the virus was present earlier. The baby’s positive test results were reported to local health officials three months after she was treated.
Health Department’s Actions
A survey of 70-75 households in the baby’s village, Balda, found no other cases of fever, cold, or cough. The department issued an HMPV advisory across Rajasthan on Friday, January 9, 2025, sharing details about the virus.
What is HMPV?
HMPV is a virus that usually causes mild respiratory symptoms like cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, and breathing problems.
It spreads through close contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces.
Prevention Tips
Wash hands regularly.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Clean surfaces frequently.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
No Cause for Concern
Experts say there is no unusual rise in severe respiratory illness cases in Rajasthan. Continued surveillance is recommended. Testing for HMPV will be done at AIIMS Jodhpur and SMS Hospital, Jaipur, which are designated labs for the state.
