Donkey Pullers Reach Collectorate
People belonging to Odh tribe, a nomadic tribe that settled in Udaipur decades ago and earn their livelihood as a daily wage laborers, mainly by pulling donkeys as a carrier to transport waste building material, today expressed their objection on alleged harassment they face from the staff of Municipal Council and Police over dumping waste construction material in some parts of the city.
People belonging to Odh tribe, a nomadic tribe that settled in Udaipur decades ago and earn their livelihood as a daily wage laborers, mainly by pulling donkeys as a carrier to transport waste building material, today expressed their objection on alleged harassment they face from the staff of Municipal Council and Police over dumping waste construction material in some parts of the city.
Showing their helplessness, the community people requested to meet District Collector and pleaded to solve their problems.
With a number of donkeys with them, several people including men and women gathered outside collectorate today morning and demanded to meet higher officials; they also handed over a written complaint mentioning their problems.
According to the letter, the community stated the way they are helping by pulling donkeys to narrow lanes of the city, where big motor vehicles can’t enter, and loading waste on donkeys’ back and dumping in four areas of the city Gulab Bagh, Ambavgarh, Shastri Circle and Brahmpol.
For a past few days, employees of Municipal Council and Policemen have not been allowing them to dump materials and have been allegedly misbehaving with them. On the other hand, due to their work, residents and motorists often face difficulty and many animal lovers even try to prohibit them from pulling donkeys.
The community members requested for a solution as they are dependent on this work only.
The community people say that they earn their livelihood by donkeys and don’t have any other work to do. They asked permission to continue dumping waste at the four sites as those are the closest and easiest to reach along with their donkeys.
